Medicare Now Covers Compression Garments for Lymphedema — Here’s What You Need to Know

Medicare Now Covers Compression Garments for Lymphedema — Here’s What You Need to Know

Thanks to the Lymphedema Treatment Act (LTA), Medicare now covers compression garments for those managing lymphedema. This is a big win for patients and healthcare providers alike—and something we at Compression Guru have been advocating for a long time.

But let’s be honest: figuring out Medicare can be tricky. That’s why we’ve put together this simple guide to help you understand what’s covered, avoid common billing issues, and get what you need—fast.

What’s New with Medicare Compression Coverage

More Garment Options Covered
Medicare now includes a broader range of compression wear—including adjustable wraps and custom nighttime garments. That means more treatment flexibility for patients and better outcomes all around.

Watch Out for Duplicate Billing
CMS (the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) has issued guidance around duplicate billing. For example, billing compression bandaging with certain lymphedema CPT codes may result in denials. The key is submitting claims carefully and correctly.

Frequency Guidelines
Here’s how often Medicare will cover compression garments:

  • Up to 3 daytime garments every 6 months
  • Up to 2 nighttime garments every 2 years

That’s solid coverage to help patients stay consistent with their therapy.

Coverage & Costs
Medicare Part B will pay for approved compression garments once the yearly deductible is met. Patients are usually responsible for the standard 20% coinsurance, but many have supplemental coverage that helps cover that amount. At Compression Guru, we offer two simple options:

  • Standard Medicare-Covered Garments – We handle the billing directly with Medicare.
  • Upgraded Garments – You pay upfront, and we file a non-assignment claim so Medicare reimburses you directly. (Most people see their reimbursement in just a few days.)

You can browse both options in our Compression Garment Collection.

Want to Speed Things Up? Use This Checklist

To get garments to patients quickly, make sure to include the following with your submission:

  • Patient info and a copy of their Medicare card
  • Signed physician order (Rx) or treatment plan
  • Garment details: brand, class, style, size, color, and quantity
  • Shipping address

The more complete your documentation, the faster we can get everything processed and shipped.
